Helmholtz in the EOSC

Helmholtz is involved in the structures of the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) at many levels.

Helmholtz in the EOSC

The European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) is a pan-European project for the development of an open federated infrastructure to enable free access to research data and other digital scientific resources across national borders and scientific disciplines. As an overarching platform, the EOSC brings together researchers, institutions and data providers from various fields. This "Web of FAIR Data and Services" is intended to provide a central point of contact for accessing, storing and sharing research data and promotes the implementation of the FAIR principles throughout Europe. The implementation of the EOSC is based on a long-term process initiated by the European Commission in 2015.

Cooperation within the EOSC

The cooperation within the EOSC is based on collaboration between the EU, represented by the Commission, the participating countries on the EOSC Steering Board and the European research institutions, represented by the EOSC Association. Together they are committed to the establishment and monitoring of Open Science in the European research landscape, whereby national and European research policy are coordinated.

In its role as the mandated organization for Germany in the EOSC Association, the National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI) e.V. participates in the EOSC and organizes events to network EOSC and the German research system.

Helmholtz participation in the EOSC

The following Helmholtz Centers and units are currently participating in the EOSC Association as members or observers:

  • Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron (DESY)
  • Deutsches Klimarechenzentrum GmbH (DKRZ)
  • Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt (DLR)
  • Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research in Europe (FAIR)
  • Forschungszentrum Jülich
  • Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung (GSI)
  • Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin für Materialien und Energie (HZB)
  • Karlsruher Institut für Technologie (KIT)

As part of the Horizon Europe funding program, various projects are being financed that contribute to the establishment and further development of the EOSC. Helmholtz Centers participate in a number of these projects.

Numerous researchers from Helmholtz are involved in the EOSC Task Forces. They provide feedback on EOSC projects and support the further development of the Strategic Research & Innovation Agenda for the EOSC (SRIA).

The Helmholtz Open Science Office organizes meetings to foster the exchange between EOSC task force members and other interested or involved persons within the Helmholtz Association.

The EOSC Portal

A wealth of resources and research services can be accessed virtually via the EOSC portal. Among other things, the Registry of Research Data Repositories, re3data, is listed there as a service.
