The Open Researcher and Contributor ID, or ORCID for short, is a unique identifier for researchers and enables the networking of those who contribute to the research process with their publications, research data, and other scientific products (such as software).

The international ORCID consortium on which the initiative is based already connects over 8 million creators worldwide with their articles and research data via a unique ID. In order to promote the widespread implementation of ORCID at universities and non-university research institutions, the project "ORCID DE - Funding of Open Researcher and Contributor ID in Germany" was launched.
