5. Helmholtz Open Science Forum on the NFDI: What next for the NFDI?

14th of October, 2025, 10:00 - 11:30

Background

The NFDI is an important project for science in Germany and internationally. All Helmholtz Centers are involved in NFDI projects. Based on a decision by the GWK in 2018, the NFDI will receive €90 million in funding from the federal and state governments between 2019 and 2028. The Science Council has evaluated the structure of the NFDI and, in its report published in July, recommends its continuation after the current funding expires in 2028. With the publication of the Science Council's report, the discussion about the “future of the NFDI” has gained momentum.

The Helmholtz Open Science Forum on October 14, 2025, will provide an opportunity for internal Helmholtz exchange on the NFDI. The discussion will be preceded by three keynote speeches.
