1st NFDI Forum

Helmholtz in the National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI) on May 04, 2021

With the National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI), the federal and state governments are pursuing the goal of systematically indexing research data for the German science system in accordance with the FAIR principles so that it can be made accessible to third parties. The NFDI will be established as a network of consortia over a period of three years from 2019 in three successive funding phases.

To promote the dialog on the NFDI at Helmholtz, the Helmholtz Open Science Office hosted a digital Helmholtz Open Science Forum under the motto “Helmholtz in the National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI)” on May 4, 2021.

As an impulse for further discussion, the Helmholtz Open Science Office invited all interested employees of the Helmholtz Association to this virtual Helmholtz Open Science Forum.

Background

With the National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI), the federal and state governments are pursuing the goal of systematically indexing research data for the German science system in accordance with the FAIR principles so that it can be made accessible to third parties. The NFDI will be established as a network of consortia over a period of three years from 2019 in three successive funding phases.

In June 2020, the Joint Science Conference (GWK) announced its funding decision in the first round of the National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI). Based on a funding recommendation from the German Research Foundation (DFG), the following consortia were selected for funding:

  • DataPLANT (Participation from Helmholtz: FZJ)

  • GHGA (Participation from Helmholtz: CISPA, DKFZ, DZNE, HMGU, HZI)

  • KonsortSWD (Participation from Helmholtz: -)

  • NFDI4BioDiversity (Participation from Helmholtz: AWI, UFZ)

  • NFDI4Cat (Participation from Helmholtz: KIT)

  • NFDI4Chem (Participation from Helmholtz: KIT, UFZ)

  • NFDI4Culture (Participation from Helmholtz: -)

  • NFDI4Health (Participation from Helmholtz: MDC)

  • NFDI4Ing (Participation from Helmholtz: FZJ, DLR, KIT)

This means that a total of eleven Helmholtz Centers are involved in seven of the nine consortia in the first round of calls.

Proposals for the second round of the NFDI could be submitted to the DFG until the end of September 2020. The Helmholtz Open Science Forum has compiled an overview of Helmholtz participation in the proposals based on the binding pre-registrations for submitting proposals to the DFG. The following picture emerges: 17 Helmholtz Centers are involved in 12 of the 18 NFDI proposals in the second round.

The National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI) e.V. was founded in October 2020. The founding members are the federal and state governments. The purpose of the association is to establish and further develop research data management in Germany and thus increase the efficiency of the German science system.
