64th Online Seminar: OpenAlex

In January 2022, the new open source index OpenAlex – named after the ancient library of Alexandria in Egypt – has launched to replace the Microsoft Academic Graph (MAG), which was discontinued at the end of 2021. The metadatabase offers a free alternative to subscription-based platforms such as Scopus, Dimensions, or Web of Science and contains over 200 million records on scholarly documents, publication venues (journals and repositories), authorship, institutions, and concepts. OpenAlex is developed and maintained by the nonprofit service company OurResearch, based in Vancouver, Canada. It draws its content from the decommissioned MAG records as well as a variety of other sources, including ORCID and Crossref. The catalog is freely accessible via REST API.
On the occasion of the launch, the Open Science Office hosted this online seminar with Dr. Heather Piwowar (ORCID), co-founder of OurResearch.

63rd Online Seminar: The Charité Dashboard on Responsible and Open Research

Dr. Nico Riedel of the QUEST Center of the Berlin Institute of Health at Charité presented on “The Charité Dashboard on Responsible and Open Research”.
Charité has committed itself to establish, promote and maintain a research environment which enhances the robustness of research and the transparency and relevance of results. But until now it was difficult to assess how prevalent those practices are in the actual research conducted at Charité, especially given the large body of literature produced by researchers each year. Therefore, the BIH QUEST Center has developed an interactive dashboard that provides an up-to-date overview of the status quo as well as the progress of various metrics of trustworthy and useful research at BIH and Charité. The presentation will provide an overview of the background, current status, and future direction of the dashboard.

62nd Online Seminar: The IPCC FAIR Guidelines from the perspective of the IPCC Data Distribution Centre (DDC)

Dr. Martina Stockhause from the German Climate Computing Centre presented on the topic of “The IPCC FAIR Guidelines from the perspective of the IPCC Data Distribution Centre (DDC)”.
FAIR data Guidelines have been introduced in the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)'s Sixth Assessment Report (AR6). The talk will present the FAIR Guidelines with their motivation and goals, as well as their implementation in the AR6. The tasks of the IPCC Data Distribution Centre (DDC) – in particular of the DDC Partner DKRZ and its contribution to the implementation of the Guidelines – were highlighted. The DKRZ has been hosting the DDC Reference Data Archive for the IPCC climate model data since 1997.

61st Online Seminar: Open Access Publishing – Zooming in on Copyright and CC Licenses
International Open Access Week 2021

In this seminar, the Helmholtz Open Science Office presented on the topic of “Open Access Publishing – Zooming in on Copyright and CC Licenses”. We gave an overview of Open Access and Open Science Publishing basics and then zoomed in on the topics of copyright (What does this mean for your research, writing and publication process?) and CC Licenses (How can you make use of these licenses to “free” your own research and to successfully engage in Open Science?). After the presentation by Christoph Bruch (Helmholtz Open Science Office) there was ample opportunity for open discussion.

60th Online Seminar: Preregistration: The panacea for trustworthy and useful science?

In this seminar, Prof. Dr. med. Ulrich Dirnagl presented on the topic of “Preregistration: The Panacea for Trustworthy and Useful Science?”. At the Charité Berlin, Ulrich Dirnagl is Professor of Clinical Neuroscience and serves as Director of the Department of Experimental Neurology. Since 2017 he is also the founding director of the QUEST Center for Responsible Biomedical Research at the Berlin Institute of Health.The QUEST Center, represented by Ulrich Dirnagl, is one of eight founding institutions and a steering member of the German Reproducibility Network (GRN) as well as the Helmholtz Open Science Office.
The term "preregistration" describes a practice that is particularly well established in the field of biomedical research: Planned studies are made available and persistently referenced in a public repository before they begin. This practice is intended to ensure the trustworthiness and reproducibility of scientific results, enable the protection of ideas at an early stage, and facilitate the coordination of one's research.

59th Online Seminar: Research Data Management - a biodiverse MOSAiC

In this seminar, Prof. Dr. Frank Oliver Glöckner presented on the topic of research data management and zoomed in on the context of biodiversity in the MOSAiC project.
Frank Oliver Glöckner is Head of Data at the AWI Computing and Data Center, Professor of Earth System Data Science at University of Bremen and Head of PANGAEA (Data Publisher for Earth and Environmental Sciences).

57th Online Seminar: Practical Steps Towards Open and Reproducible Research
February 10, 2021
The event focused on a presentation by Dr. Heidi Seibold on how scientific results can easily be made both, open and reproducible.
Heidi Seibold was at that time a group leader at Helmholtz AI. Her group "Open AI in Health" works on improving practices of open and reproducible research in artificial intelligence and health research. After the presentation there was ample opportunity for open discussion.

56th Online Seminar: Open Access Publishing for Early Career Researchers at Helmholtz
October 20, 2020
On the occasion of the International Open Access Week 2020 following the theme “Open with Purpose: Taking Action to Build Structural Equity and Inclusion” the Helmholtz Open Science Office held its 56th online seminar.
The event was open for all interested persons from the Helmholtz Association. The event’s focus lay particularly on open access publishing; after two short presentations, there was ample opportunity for open discussion. The event was held in English.
